Top 7 Tips for Taking a Beautiful Engagement Ring Selfie

In the modern day, there's no better way to announce your engagement than a social media update with an accompanying engagement ring selfie. Gone are the days of calling all of your friends and family one by one. One artful photo shared on the internet and the moment is eternalised on the web, as well as in the memories of you and your partner. Sharing the great news is all part of the fun these days, but you may be wondering how to do your new engagement ring justice. If you haven't got a particularly creative eye, you may be worried about taking a selfie that is missing the wow-factor. Here at Marlow's Diamonds, we are the experts in diamond engagement rings. Here are our top tips for taking the perfect engagement ring selfie that will have all of your friends jealous.

Lighting is important

The best way to photograph a diamond, or any gem for that matter, is in natural sunlight. So, set up your photoshoot near a window or outside. Taking a photo of your ring in a dimly lit room will guarantee a blurry photo and your ring won't twinkle and sparkle like it should. To get the maximum amount of light moving through the stone, you need natural sunlight.

Know your ring

What do you love most about your ring? Is it the unique setting? The diamond clusters? Or perhaps it's even the colour and style of the band. You should decide what the favourite part of your ring is and incorporate this into your selfie. Experiment with the angle of your shot in order to really capture its best qualities. If you are simply in love with the cut and clarity of your stone, an overhead shot may be the best option.

Get your nails done

It's a mistake that so many have made before, and many more will make in the future. More often than not, proposals come as somewhat of a surprise. You can be forgiven for not having a perfect manicure at the moment of your engagement. However, when you take your engagement ring selfie, it's probably best to ensure that your nails are looking neat and tidy at the very least. If you want to share a photo seconds after it's happened, apply a little lotion and get creative with your poses to hide any unloved nails.

Choose an exciting background

If you can, try and incorporate an exciting background into your engagement ring selfie. If your proposal has taken place on holiday, or at one of your favourite locations, try to incorporate this into the background. However, if your proposal was relatively low key, or you are taking your selfie a few days later, try to include a landscape, a pattern or something that captures your personality.

Don't zoom, move!

Taking a picture on your mobile will never give you professional quality, however there are a few easy tricks to ensure that your shots remain clear and crisp. One of the most important rules is to avoid the zoom on your camera. This will make your pictures blurry and pixelated. It's best to move your phone towards your ring and then tap the screen where you want the camera to focus.

Strike a pose

Yes, there's even an art to hand modelling. When taking your engagement ring selfie, don't straighten your fingers out so much that they look stiff and awkward. Find yourself a prop or a pose and relax your fingers to make it look natural. You may want to avoid getting in too close in order to avoid your camera picking up on every pore, scar and strand of hair. You can also tilt the camera at different angles to experiment with the overall effect.

Edit and filter, if you must

If in doubt, you can always edit and filter. If you don't feel like your photography skills are up to scratch, it's best to utilise the modern technology we have available. Add a filter that compliments the sparkle of your ring, rather than making it look dark and dull. If your editing skills are better than your camera skills, you can even edit out any blemishes or change the brightness, saturation and contrast for a striking engagement selfie.
