How to Measure the Correct Ring Size

In the ancient times, the Egyptians believed that a circle represented eternity which led to the tradition of married couples wearing breaded reed rings on the ring finger of their left hand which is said to have veins connecting directly to the heart.

Fast forward to 1940s that produced a viral ad campaign saying “A diamond is forever” and diamond engagement rings became a representation of love and lifetime commitment. In fact, in today’s time, you will not see any engagement or proposal deemed complete without a GIA certified diamond ring donning the hands of the girl.

Now since the GIA certified diamond rings could be highly valued, it becomes extremely important to select not just a ring that would be liked by your partner but also the correct size of the band. The best way to get the right size of your finger is by visiting a jeweller and getting him to measure it.

However, we have some other methods that would help you measure the ring size at home so that you can place your ring order online with ease.

Method 1: Refer a Perfectly Fitting Ring

This is one of the simplest methods to measure the size of the ring.

Things You Need:

  • A ring that fits the engagement ring finger
  • A measuring ruler

How to Measure:

  • Measure the internal diameter of the ring (excluding the metal part) in millimetres.
  • Use the size conversion chart available on the jeweller’s website to know the right size of your ring.

Method 2: Use a Floss or String

Things You Need:

  • Floss or String
  • A measuring ruler
  • Marker or Pen

How to Measure:

  • Cut a 6-inch long floss or string.
  • Roll the string around the base (just below the knuckles) of the ring finger.
  • Take a pen and mark the string wherever it ends.
  • Unfold the string and place it adjacent to a measuring ruler. The number appearing closest to the marked point is the size of your ring in millimetres.
  • Use the size conversion chart available on the jeweller’s website to know the right size of your ring.

Method 3: Use a Paper Strip

Things You Need:

  • A paper strip
  • A measuring ruler
  • Marker or Pen

How to Measure:

  • Cut a 100-millimetre long thin paper strip.
  • Roll the paper around the base (just below the knuckles) of the ring finger.
  • Take a pen and mark the point wherever the two ends of the paper meet.
  • Unfold the paper and place it adjacent to a measuring ruler. The number appearing closest to the marked point is the size of your ring in millimetres.
  • Use the size conversion chart available on the jeweller’s website to know the right size of your ring.
