How to Clean Your Diamond Rings

How to Clean Your Diamond Rings

There are many ways to skin a cat, as the saying goes. Likewise, there are many ways to clean a diamond ring. You may have heard of cleaning your ring with baking soda, vinegar or even toothpaste but these can be quite abrasive and leave your ring either smelling minty fresh or of something equally interesting. There are many quick dip solutions you can buy to clean your ring too, but the best solution will vary depending on different things like the composition of the metal in the ring. Today we’re going to go over a tried and tested, quick, safe and easy method of cleaning any diamond ring that you can do at home.

STEP ONE: MIX SOME SOAP AND WATER

This method is beautifully simple, but there are some things to watch out for. Mix some dish soap, hand soap or shampoo with warm water in a bowl. Swish it around and get plenty of suds. Make sure that you are using a gentle soap, ideally one which is made of natural ingredients and not harsh commercial chemicals. Also watch out and make sure that whatever soap you’re using does not contain moisturisers. These will leave a film on your ring and you'll only find yourself cleaning it again once it's dry.

STEP TWO: SOAK THE RING

Again, nice and simple place the ring in the bowl and let it soak for 15 minutes. You need to make sure you give the soap time to penetrate and loosen the dirt, dust and grime which has built up in there. After 15 minutes take the ring out and examine it. If your ring is now clean, rinse it off in clean water and move on to Step Four. If not, we have a little more work to do.

STEP THREE

Take a SOFT toothbrush not a hard or medium one and lightly scrub the dirt out of the ring. If you use a medium-bristled or a hard-bristled brush you can scratch the ring, so be careful. Use the bristles (of your soft toothbrush) and dig the dirt out of the hard-to-reach crevices. You can use a toothpick if necessary, but be careful not to slip and scratch the ring. When you're done, rinse the ring in clean water.

STEP FOUR

Lay your ring out to dry on a piece of paper towel or a clean cloth. Let it completely air dry before you put it on, put it on wet and it's likely to slip off. After the care you’ve taken to clean this ring the last thing you want to do is lose it.

If still your ring is dirty, you may need to take your ring to a jeweller and have it cleaned professionally with an ultrasonic cleaner. You can buy these and use these at home, but it's usually cheaper and easier to just ask your jeweller.
