Diamond Cut

How to Assess Diamond Cuts

'Cut' is one of the 5 C's of choosing diamonds – the other four being clarity, colour, certification and carat weight. People often use the terms 'cut' and 'shape' interchangeably, though they are technically two different, albeit similar, things. Either way, the cut is one of the most important considerations when choosing a diamond, especially when choosing an engagement ring. How do you know which of two diamonds is the better cut? How do you know which cut you should choose to propose to your other half?

Here at Marlow's Diamonds we use the GIA cut scale for our diamond ratings. Using this system the diamond’s cut will be rated from Excellent to Poor, based on several different things. These include the proportions of the diamonds, the brilliance of the gem and the light pattern inside the stone as seen from above. Here at Marlow's Diamonds we recommend you choose an Excellent or Very Good cut for an engagement ring as they offer the highest levels of fire, brilliance and scintillation. Brilliance is the brightness of the diamond, the fire is the fire is the spread of light across the visible spectrum and the scintillation is the flashes of light and dark and the sparkle you see when the diamond is moved.

If you want to compare two different diamonds to see which has the better cut of the two, examine it for the amount of light it shines, the colours of light you can see and the amount of sparkle you get when you move the stone. At its most basic level, the shinier the stone, the better the cut.

Which Diamond Cut Should I Choose?

Now that we've figured out the optimum quality of a cut, it's important to know which cut you want – this is where people confuse 'cut' with 'shape'. As far as engagement rings go, the significant majority (around 75%) of buyers want a traditionalRound Brilliant diamond. This cut offer the highest level of brilliance due to the symmetry of the cut and the proportions of the stone (when cut properly). However as with haircuts, not everyone wants the same diamond cut, and no one cut is perfect for everyone.

Other popular diamond cuts include the Princess cut for the trendier girl, the Emerald cut for glamorous girls out there and the Asscher cut for those who are more into a 20's art deco vintage style. There are many different cuts to choose from, and while you can generalise to some extent, the exact cut your other half is likely to prefer will depend on everything from their personal tastes to the shape and size of their fingers. If you’re struggling to choose a specific cut we highly, highly recommend you read our blog or get in contact with us today, and we’ll be more than happy to help set you on the right path towards an engagement ring your other half wouldn't be able to refuse.
