The man who purchased the gem is renowned New York diamond cutter Isaac Wolf. He will no doubt be hoping to make a good return on his investment.
Previously known as the Pink Star, the gem in question measures 2.69cm by 2.06cm and it is set on a ring. Mr Wolf has renamed the item the Pink Dream.
One of the reasons why the stone fetched such a high price was because of its rarity. Most pink diamonds weigh less than five carats. In comparison, the Pink Dream comes in at nearly 60 carats.
As he brought down the hammer on the record-breaking sale, Sotheby's David Bennett said: 'Ladies and gentlemen, [this] is the world record bid for a diamond ever bid and it's right here.
Meanwhile, commenting on the diamond, he remarked: 'It's really extraordinarily rare. Very, very few of these stones have ever appeared at auction.'
Heading to auction to splash out millions of pounds on diamonds may not be something you're planning on doing any time soon.
