Your Guide to Certified, Self-Certified, and Uncertified Diamonds

Are you planning to propose? Then you must have spent a lot of time reading about the latest trends, various types of diamond engagement rings, and so on. There are quite a lot of things that one has to consider when buying a diamond engagement ring.

One of the major concerns when buying diamond engagement rings is the quality of the diamond. As an amateur, determining a diamond’s quality is not possible for someone without knowledge of diamonds. This is why certificates exist. Certifications play an essential role in letting customers know about the quality of the diamond they are purchasing. Even then, there is always that little doubt about if the certifications are credible at all.

Here, we are going to tell you all about certified, self-certified, and uncertified diamonds so you can make an educated decision when you go to buy diamond engagement rings.

Certified Diamonds

These are diamonds that are evaluated and graded in a third-party institution by experts in the field. Certified diamonds go through examination and grading processes to have their value assessed by expert gemstone grading labs. Such diamonds come with grading reports where any customer can check the quality of the diamond based on the 4Cs (Clarity, Carat Weight, Cut, and Color) which are the main standards of grading in the diamond industry.

The most reliable and reputed grading labs worldwide are the G.I.A. (Gemological Institute of America), A.G.S. (American Gem Society), and E.G.L. (European Gemological Laboratory). If you buy a diamond engagement ring certified by any of the above, you can be assured that the diamond is genuine and the grading in the report can be trusted.

Self-Certified Diamonds

Self-certified diamonds are diamonds that are certified by the sellers themselves. In this case, diamonds are bought, examined in-house, and certified usually by retail sellers. The concern with buying self-certified diamonds is that they are not certified by a credible source. Since the main purpose of a retailer is to sell, they can intentionally mark up the grades of their products to make a sale.

Many sellers buy low-quality diamonds, “enhance” them in their labs, grade them independently, and issue certificates with higher grades to make them look more credible since it is almost impossible to tell the quality of a diamond with the naked eye.

What are Uncertified Diamonds?

Uncertified diamonds are diamonds that are not certified and are bought solely on the word of the seller. These diamonds are not reliable and certainly not something you would want to spend a big chunk of your saving on. Uncertified diamond engagement rings can be cheaper due to obvious reasons, however, it is easy for a seller to rob you by claiming to sell a high-quality diamond even when it’s not.

Summing Up

Jewelers can be convincing when it comes to selling high-priced jewelry like diamond engagement rings. But as a customer, it is best to be informed and only spend your money on diamonds that are certified by a credible organization.
